Onext is a Hong Kong based company in 2000. However, the story of the appearance began two years earlier, when the future founder defended an innovative project to create a universal charger. His work was an overwhelming success, and it was at that moment that he came up with the idea of creating his own electronics company. That is how Onext appeared, the name of which consisted of two words “Original” and “Next”, which literally translates as “Next Original”.
The main objective of the company is to create equipment in which price and quality will be combined. In 2004, the company began its journey in the global market, after it has established itself in Hong Kong. Since its inception, the company has been producing only accessories for digital devices, but over time it began to actively develop and create its own devices. The first Onext e-books appeared in 2010, and they will be the subject of discussion.
ONEXT Touch & Read 001
This is the first model released by the company in the line of e-books, which has both positive aspects and rather strange solutions. The first thing that catches your eye is the design of the device. The wide frames around the screen, at first glance, make the design a bit outdated, and making a “cut-off” top was a rather strange decision. The device has no mechanical buttons except the power button, and all the main control is carried out using the touch keys at the bottom of the screen.
The reader uses the SiPix matrix, the consumption of which is much less than that of the standard E-Ink matrix. Therefore, the battery will last for more than 10 thousand page turning. But this technology has its drawbacks, in general it is a regular screen of an e-book, but the paper is grayer in several shades, and ink appears more slowly. This is not so critical, but some users may not like it.
Characteristics:
- Control: via sensor
- Backlight: no
- Wi-Fi: yes
- Display diagonal: 6 "
- Resolution: 600 × 800 px
- HDD: 2 GB
- RAM: 128 MB
- Battery: 1530 mAh
- Weight: 240g
- Price: 3200 rubles
The e-book does not have a backlight, which will make it difficult to read in places with low light, but on the other hand will save battery power. As for the software, it runs on the Linux operating system and has a clear interface. However, there are noticeable brakes associated with a lack of RAM, which is only 128 megabytes.
ONEXT Touch & Read 002
This model came out just six months after the first generation e-book, it is noticeable that the company worked on the bugs, but a little in the wrong direction. Onext decided to increase the size of the device and screen, including, without increasing productivity. The diagonal of the device has increased to 9. The frames have noticeably decreased, and a lot of mechanical buttons have been added to the case, which improve ergonomics and simplify the use of the device.
The reader also uses the SiPix matrix, the features of which have already been described just above. In general, this slightly increased the duration of the work and now it is 7500 pages usual for electronic books - the result is not bad, but was it worth it. Enlarging the screen also caused a deterioration in display quality, since the screen resolution was slightly increased, and the number of pixels per inch was only less, so the characters have a blurry halo and fuzzy quality.
Characteristics:
- Management: using mechanical buttons and a touch screen
- Backlight: no
- Wi-Fi: yes
- Display diagonal: 9 "
- Resolution: 768 × 1024 px
- HDD: 2 GB
- RAM: 128 MB
- Battery: 1530 mAh
- Weight: 487g
- Price: 5500 rubles
There is no backlight, as in the previous version. The amount of RAM remained at the same value, and support for micro SDHC cards disappeared, which generally did little harm to the device and reduced the number of connectors on the side. The software was slightly modified, but due to the screen size and RAM of 128 megabytes - the device hangs noticeably and conducts long document downloads.
Since at the moment, Onext has released only two devices in its line of e-books, for completeness, several other readers in the same price category will be described.
Ritmix RBK-675FL
This reader has an interesting design made in dark colors, the plastic frames are small, not counting the bottom panel, on which there are mechanical control buttons, among which are the increase and decrease of pages, the return button, the main menu and power button. The screen is small, only 6 inches, with a sufficiently large resolution and the number of pixels per inch, which is why the picture looks high-quality, and the characters are displayed clearly.
Characteristics:
- Management: by sensor and mechanical buttons
- Backlight: yes
- Wi-Fi: no
- Display diagonal: 6 "
- Resolution: 1024 × 758 px
- HDD: 4 GB
- RAM: 512 MB
- Battery: 1500mAh
- Weight: 160g
- Price: 5790 rubles
In general, the only good thing in this device is its screen and the presence of a backlight, but it is because of it that it has high power consumption. At the same time, it lacks Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, which makes it difficult to quickly transfer digital books and forces you to do this through a wire or using a memory card. The software interface is not intuitive and finding books in the file manager is difficult.
Tesla viva
This reader is produced by a company known worldwide for its cars, but meanwhile Tesla creates many electronic devices. Viva has a 6-inch display, encased in a minimalist design, in the corporate identity of the company. A matrix with E-Ink Carta technology is used, which has average power consumption and excellent display quality. On average, the battery of the device is enough for 7500 pages, which on average is a good result for this kind of reader.
Characteristics:
- Management: using buttons and sensor
- Backlight: yes
- Wi-Fi: no
- Display diagonal: 6 "
- Resolution: 1024 × 758 px
- HDD: 8 GB
- RAM: 128 MB
- Battery: 1700 mAh
- Weight: 190g
- Price: 4490 rubles
The reader supports all known formats for reading documents, while it does not have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and file transfer is carried out using a USB cable. It is possible to turn on the backlight for reading in dimly lit places. Everything seems to be fine and for its price this is a great device, but there is one big problem - the assembly. Viva is very fragile and it is very easy to break from a simple kink of the case.
Digma e63S
The last to submit on this list, the most budget of all presented. A reader with a display of 800 by 600 pixels, the resolution of the matrix is 167 pixels per inch, this ratio, although a little atypical, has good display quality and sharpness of characters, 16 gradations of gray and allow contrasting images to be displayed.
Characteristics:
- Control: using keys and touch screen
- Backlight: no
- Wi-Fi: no
- Display diagonal: 6 "
- Resolution: 800x600 px
- HDD: 4 GB
- RAM: 128 MB
- Battery: 1500mAh
- Weight: 160g
- Price: 4340 rubles
The case is made of plastic, which feels a little cheap. On the sides and at the bottom of the machine are mechanical buttons for controlling and turning books. In total, the battery lasts more than 7500 pages. There is no backlight, as well as wireless communications.
