The thermometer is designed to determine the temperature of the air outdoors. At the same time, no matter how high-quality the device may be, it is impossible to achieve an accurate measurement without proper installation. Before deciding how and in what place to fix the thermometer, you need to find out some nuances regarding this process.
Features of mounting a street thermometer
It is almost impossible to find out the exact temperature with an outdoor thermometer located on the window frame. The main reason for this can be called thermal radiation, which comes from the building structures, and to a greater extent from glass, through which about 30% of the heat from the room is lost. This heat will somehow affect the measuring device and increase the value it receives by a certain number of degrees.
In winter, when the outside temperature differs from the internal value by 40-60 degrees, the thermometer will be overestimated by 2-4 degrees.
In summer, exposure to the sun can lead to an even greater difference between the actual and the displayed temperature.
In winter, the thermometer readings differ from the actual temperature by at least 2-4 degrees
In order for the deviations to be minimal, choosing how and where to fix the thermometer, it is necessary to follow certain rules, the main of which include:
- installation at the greatest possible distance from heat sources (window window, ventilation system output or remote unit of the air conditioner);
- use for installation you need a window that faces north.
Also, do not install a thermometer on those wings that will often open and close, as this can lead to weakening of the fasteners, which will inevitably lead to the fall of the device.
The safest and easiest fixation techniques
There are several ways to mount outdoor thermometers:
- duct tape;
- suction cups;
- self-tapping screws;
- brackets.
The most common way is to fasten a street thermometer with adhesive tape. If it did not come in the kit, it can be replaced with double-sided tape. Everyone can install the device with the help of a tape, for this it will not take a lot of effort and additional materials, except for any suitable degreasing composition. As the latter, you can use alcohol, turpentine or nail polish remover, as well as any other tool designed to degrease the surface.
To keep the thermometer securely, the place where it will be attached is treated with a degreasing agent and wiped dry with a lint-free cloth. A protective film is removed from the adhesive tape, and the thermometer is pressed against the surface with a little effort. The disadvantage of this method of attachment is its unreliability. If you frequently open the window sash, the appliance may fall.
If it was not possible to attach the thermometer in this way the first time, a knife wrapped in a cloth soaked with solvent will help to remove it. In the same way, the adhesive tape should be removed from the device itself and replaced with a new one.After this, the thermometer cannot be glued to the same place. It is better to prudently choose a new position and repeat the same steps.
Also, a not very reliable way of attaching a thermometer to the window frame or glass is suction cups. More often in this way electronic thermometers are attached. Suction cups can only be used if the frame does not open at all.
Before installing the thermometer, the surface is also degreased, wiped dry, and only after that the device is installed on it.
However, with a strong gusty wind or rain, detachment of the suction cups is almost inevitable.
How to fix the outdoor thermometer as securely as possible?
The most reliable way to mount a street thermometer on a window is self-tapping screws. To do this, use the shortest of their existing types with a semicircular head. First, in the “foot-holders” in the center, you need to drill small holes and screw the thermometer in the right place to the plastic window. Before mounting, a small amount of sealant must be applied around the hole in the foot to prevent moisture and dirt from entering the frame.
This method of attachment is one of the most reliable and durable, but at the same time leads to deformation of the plastic frame. But in the winter of the year, when snow falls from the roof, this type of fastening can fail.
Alternative locations for mounting a thermometer
To mount the thermometer, you can choose not the window frame, but its slope.
In this case, expensive metal-plastic or wooden structures will not be damaged. Another advantage of this method of fastening can be called the maximum distance from the glass, which means that the accuracy of the thermometer will be higher.
To mount the device in this way, you must first drill the slope at a distance of four centimeters from its outer edge, so that the edge of the concrete or brick wall does not break off. Dowels are installed in the holes obtained, into which the self-tapping screws will be screwed.
“Paw-holders”, which in most cases are designed to fix the device to the frame, will not allow you to mount the device in the desired position. Therefore, they can be cut or choose a device in which they are not provided.
Instead of paws, homemade metal plates are suitable - brackets bent into a suitable shape.
Thus, there are several ways to install an outdoor thermometer. If the method “stuck or screwed” does not fit, you can choose a device that is placed on the windowsill. In this case, a special sensor connected to the main device with a flexible wire will be used to measure the temperature of the street air.
The wire and sensor do not deform even under strong mechanical stress, which will ensure their continued operation. But like other instruments designed to measure temperature, this option has a certain error and the accuracy of the readings is not absolute.
